The Nimitz Encounter is one of the most compelling and well-documented UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) sightings in history. It occurred on November 14, 2004, and involved the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group during a routine training exercise in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 100 miles southwest of San Diego, California.
The incident began when the USS Princeton, part of the Nimitz group, detected mysterious radar signals over several days. These signals were from objects that would later be described as "anomalous aerial vehicles" (AAVs). The AAVs exhibited extraordinary capabilities, including hovering at altitudes above 80,000 feet and then descending rapidly to sea level in a matter of seconds, baffling the Princeton's radar operators.
The encounter escalated when two F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jets from the Nimitz were redirected from their training mission to investigate the AAVs. The pilots, including Commander David Fravor, witnessed a Tic-Tac shaped object that maneuvered with unprecedented speed and agility. The object, about the size of their jets, showed no visible means of propulsion or control surfaces and could rapidly change direction and altitude.
As Commander Fravor attempted a closer inspection, the Tic-Tac UAP mirrored his movements before abruptly accelerating away at a speed that seemed impossible with current human technology. Moments later, it was spotted by radar nearly 60 miles away.
This encounter was captured on video and has been widely analyzed and discussed. The UAP's advanced capabilities, such as its rapid acceleration, low observability, and flight dynamics, remain unexplained and have sparked significant interest in the study of UAPs.
Following the encounter, the military's approach was to maintain confidentiality, with details of the incident remaining classified.
